Stove output
All stoves have a rated output that is measured in kilowatts (kW). Because the heat output of a stove varies over time depending on whether fuel has just been added, this figure is an average and is intended as a guide. When we conduct a survey for you, we will measure your room and calculate the heat required for the room, taking into account the age of the property, construction methods, and how many external walls there are to the room.
Ecodesign Ready
From 2022 onwards, all stoves on sale must be classed as EcoDesign ready, meaning they comply with the five fundamental requirements for efficiency and emissions of the 2022 legislation to tackle air pollution.
Clear Skies mark
In addition to the certification above , the stove industry has created a more stringent voluntary certifications scheme for the UK.
Multifuel or woodburner only?
Depending upon the grate fitted, a stove is classed as either a multi-fuel stove (which can burn smokeless fuel, wood, wood briquettes and peat) or a wood burner only (burning just wood, wood briquettes and peat).
Width measurements
If a stove is being fitted into a fireplace, then you are constrained by the width of the original chamber that was created when the house was built. Therefore some properties will require a narrower stove. Often old properties have more space available and more modern properties can be a little smaller.
Height measurements
Normally the lintel of a fireplace can be raised, but there are occasions when this isn’t feasible, or there is a fire surround in place that you want to retain. In these situations in may be useful to choose a stove that is shorter.
Corner or close-to-wall installations
If you are installing a freestanding stove (not in an existing fireplace) then you must be careful to comply with the Clearances to Combustibles figures that are provided for every stove model. In our listing any stove with a clearance of 200mm or less to the rear is shown as being suitable for a close-to-wall install. Corner installs require low clearance figures to the sides of the stove as well as to the rear. Some stoves may need an additional heat shield fitted to the back of the stove to achieve these figures.
Plasterboard is considered combustible, as are the wooden batons behind it. Be aware that fireboard (cement board) does not protect timbers behind it and the clearances must still be complied with.
